BFT Access Control Installation: The Houston Owner’s Guide

If your BFT access control unit has stopped reading keypads, ignoring remotes, or leaving your gate stuck halfway open, the fix usually comes down to replacing the control board, the receiver, or the keypad itself. In Houston, you’ll typically pay between $380 and $850 installed for a BFT access control component swap, depending on which board or reader your system uses and how much rewiring is involved. Most BFT access control replacements take us under two hours on-site, and we stock the common boards and keypads on the truck. Owners usually discover the failure the hard way: a keypad that beeps but won’t open, a remote that worked yesterday and doesn’t today, or a gate that opens fine from the house but won’t respond to the intercom at the curb.

If that sounds like your week, here’s the straight picture on what’s involved, what it costs, and how we handle it.

Which BFT Models This Applies To

BFT has been making gate operators since 1981, and their access control line spans a few distinct families. The most common units we see across Houston driveways and commercial lots are the BFT Deimos, BFT Phobos, BFT Bora, and the newer BFT Rigel series. Each has its own control-board revision, and the access control receiver is either integrated onto the main board or mounted as a separate plug-in module. The compatibility gotcha: a Phobos board from 2015 won’t accept the newer Rigel keypad protocol, and vice versa. BFT sells the keypads and readers as matched sets to the board revision, which is why an eBay board can turn into a morning of frustration.

To identify what you have, look at the metal plate on the operator arm or the label inside the control box. It’ll show the model name and a revision letter. We always match by that label, not by what the previous owner said was installed. For older BFT units where the OEM access control module is discontinued, we use quality aftermarket equivalents that speak the same radio frequency and wiring pinout, and we test them on the bench before they leave the shop. On newer systems, we use OEM BFT parts. If the serial label is faded or missing, a photo of the board on your phone is enough for us to identify it. Dean Prescott has been sorting BFT revisions since these units first started appearing in Houston, and the rule is simple: match the revision, or the keypad just sits there blinking at you.

Signs Your BFT Access Control Installation Is Failing

  • The keypad beeps and the display lights up, but the gate won’t move. This usually means the keypad is sending the signal, but the receiver or the relay on the control board isn’t closing the circuit. The keypad’s fine; the board isn’t listening.
  • A remote that worked for years now only works from five feet away. The receiver’s range collapses as the capacitors age. In Houston’s humidity, this happens faster than in drier climates, since condensation inside the box accelerates the degradation.
  • The gate opens on its own, or won’t close without pressing the button three times. This is often a failing relay that’s either chattering open or arcing closed. It’s the electronic equivalent of a worn ignition switch.
  • One access point works while the other doesn’t. If the keypad at the gate works but the intercom at the house doesn’t (or the other way around), the wiring between them has usually gone bad, or the slave reader has failed independently of the main board.
  • The display shows a code you don’t recognize, or goes blank entirely. Blank displays on a BFT keypad that used to light up often trace back to a power-supply problem on the board, not a dead keypad. Swapping the keypad fixes nothing in that case.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Here’s the honest price picture for Houston, as of this writing:

  • BFT control board replacement: $320 – $520 parts and labor, depending on model and revision
  • BFT receiver module: $180 – $260 installed
  • BFT keypad or card reader: $240 – $380 installed, including programming
  • Full access control refresh (board, receiver, keypad): $650 – $850 installed
  • Diagnostic visit (waived with the repair): $95, applied toward the work if you approve the quote

Every quote is written and agreed before a single bolt is touched. The price covers the part, the labor, the programming, and testing both at the gate and from the house. The range comes down to the board revision (newer revisions cost more), whether we’re splicing into existing wiring or running new low-voltage line, and whether the transformer feeding the access control also needs replacing. Houston’s heat loads these transformers harder than the manufacturer’s baseline, and if the output is sagging, we’ll tell you before recommending any board swap. Every BFT access control installation carries the 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the repair fails inside a year, we come back and fix it at no charge. Written on the invoice, not just said out loud.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely check a few things yourself: confirm the system has power (look for the LED on the board), note whether the keypad beeps when pressed, and check if the breaker feeding the gate is tripped. What you shouldn’t do is open the control board housing and start probing with a multimeter unless you’ve done low-voltage board work before. The board carries live 120VAC on the supply side, and a slip with a probe can fry the transformer, the board, or you. We’ve also seen more than one home-gamer short a BFT board by swapping a keypad with its power still connected. The diagnostic visit exists for a reason: Dean and the crew can read a BFT board’s symptoms in about the time it takes to tell us what the gate is doing, and the diagnostic fee is waived if you approve the quote.
