Most BFT keypad and intercom failures in Houston come down to three things: corroded terminals from Gulf Coast humidity, dead or drifted keypad membranes, and control-board relay failures from power surges after thunderstorms. A full keypad replacement installed typically runs $225 to $410 parts and labor. Intercom module swaps land between $275 and $520 depending on whether we’re replacing the outdoor call station, the indoor handset, or both. We stock the common BFT-compatible parts on the truck, so in most neighborhoods we can diagnose and swap the same day.
How owners usually find out: the gate works fine from the remote or the loop detector, but the keypad either won’t accept the code, or the intercom rings but neither side hears anything. Sometimes the keypad beeps but the gate won’t move. That’s almost always the keypad’s output relay or the wiring between the keypad and the BFT control board, not the motor itself. Dean Prescott has replaced enough of these across Houston, from Bellaire to Cypress, to know which BFT parts tend to fail first and which ones are worth repairing instead of replacing. Tell me what the gate is doing – or not doing – and I’ll give you a real number before I ever touch a wrench.
Which BFT Models This Applies To
BFT keypads and intercoms show up across most of the brand’s residential and light-commercial lineup here in Houston. The most common models we service are the BFT MITTO series (MITTO 2, MITTO 4, MITTO 8), the BFT RIGEL 5 keypad, the BFT THALIA and THALIA P control boards, and the BFT PERSEO and DEIMOS intercom and access panels. If your keypad is a flush-mounted metal-faced unit with a 4-digit display, it’s likely a RIGEL. If it’s a slim plastic keypad with blue-backed buttons, it’s usually a MITTO. The model number is printed on a small label inside the keypad housing, usually on the back of the PCB or on the side of the mounting bracket.
One compatibility gotcha worth knowing: BFT changed the keypad wiring protocol between the older EBP and the newer UBP/P spindle-style panels. A keypad that worked with a 2010-era BFT board will not always talk to a THALIA P board without a protocol adapter, and vice versa. We verify board-to-keypad compatibility before we ever order a part, because returning the wrong unit wastes a week. On the OEM-vs-aftermarket question: for BFT specifically, we use OEM BFT replacement parts whenever the job involves the control board or intercom audio. For keypad membranes and housings, there are solid aftermarket equivalents that match the BFT footprint and save $40 to $80. We’ll give you the choice and the price difference before anything gets ordered.

Signs Your BFT Keypad & Intercom Is Failing
- The keypad accepts the code but the gate doesn’t move. This is almost never the motor. It’s the keypad’s output relay hanging closed, or a broken wire between the keypad and the BFT control board. We test the relay first because it’s a $20 fix versus a $400 keypad replacement.
- Buttons work intermittently or only when pressed hard. Houston’s heat and humidity break down the conductive carbon pads under the keypad membrane. After a few summers, several numbers will stop registering unless you mash them. A new membrane usually resolves it without replacing the whole keypad.
- The intercom rings but you hear nothing, or the visitor hears nothing. On BFT intercoms, this is typically a corroded speaker or microphone wire at the outdoor station, especially after periods of driving rain. The audio module itself can also fail, but we test the wiring path before condemning the board.
- The keypad beeps on every keypress but the code resets itself. This points to a failing EEPROM chip on the keypad’s logic board, which stores the user codes. When it starts dropping codes, no amount of reprogramming sticks. The fix is a replacement keypad or logic board.
- You smell burnt plastic near the keypad or see a dark scorch mark. This is usually a lightning strike or power surge that traveled through the phone line or keypad wiring into the BFT board. Turn off the gate operator breaker and call us. A burnt keypad can be swapped, but the surge may have also damaged the main board, and that changes the repair scope.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
In Houston, a BFT keypad replacement installed runs $225 to $410. A RIGEL 5 keypad replacement is on the lower end, around $250 to $320. A MITTO with a new housing and membrane runs $275 to $380. Intercom jobs are more variable: a single outdoor call station replacement with the wiring intact runs $275 to $400. If we’re pulling new audio cable between the gate and the house, add $150 to $300 depending on the distance and whether we’re trenching under a driveway or fishing through an existing conduit.
Every Portcullis Gate Repair Houston quote includes the part, the labor, and a written price before we start. That price is the price – no discovering a “secondary issue” after the gate is apart and doubling the invoice. The Kingswell Guarantee covers the repair for 365 days, in writing, on the invoice. If the keypad or intercom we installed fails inside that year, we come back and make it right at no charge. That’s the 365-Day Done Right Promise, and it applies to every BFT job we do in Houston.
DIY or Call Us?
A BFT keypad runs on low voltage – usually 24 volts DC back at the control board – so the shock risk is minimal. The real damage risk is to your wallet: miswiring the keypad or bridging the wrong terminals can send 120 volts where 24 volts is expected, and that kills the BFT control board. A keypad swap gone wrong often turns a $300 job into a $900 board replacement. We’ve seen it more than once in Houston, including a DIY attempt in Katy that fried a THALIA board beyond repair.
What you can safely do: check that the keypad has power (the display or backlight should be on), check that the breaker for the gate operator is on, and listen for a click from the control board when you enter the code. If the click is there but the gate doesn’t move, the keypad is fine and the problem is downstream. If there’s no click, the issue is the keypad or the wiring, and that’s when you call us at (325) 378-0676. We’re not trying to make money off a $5 fuse replacement we tell you to do yourself. But when the failure is in the keypad logic or the intercom module, a technician is the cheaper path.

AfterHow much does BFT keypad replacement cost in Houston?
A BFT keypad replacement in Houston typically costs $225 to $410 installed, including the part and labor. The spread depends on the model (RIGEL 5 vs MITTO series) and whether existing wiring can be reused. Call (325) 378-0676 for an exact quote on your model – estimates are free.
Can you repair my BFT keypad instead of replacing it?
Sometimes, yes. Keypad membranes and sticky buttons can often be repaired with a membrane kit, saving $60 to $100 versus a full replacement. Failed logic boards and EEPROM chips usually mean a new keypad is the smarter long-term fix. We’ll tell you which is which before you spend a dollar.
How long does a keypad or intercom swap take?
Most BFT keypad replacements take 45 to 90 minutes on site. Intercom replacements with wiring run an hour to three hours, depending on cable condition. If we quoted a window, that’s the window we show up in.
Do you stock BFT keypad and intercom parts on the truck?
We carry common BFT RIGEL and MITTO keypads, membranes, and intercom modules on the truck, along with wiring and connectors. If your part isn’t on board, we can usually have it in hand within two to three business days. We also stock parts for LiftMaster, Mighty Mule, and Ghost Controls systems, so if the problem turns out to be a different component, we’re already prepared.
If your BFT keypad or intercom is down, call us at (325) 378-0676. A live person answers – not a voicemail tree. We’ll quote you a written price before any work starts, and we’ll stand behind the repair for 365 days.
