If your BFT gate has a cracked hinge, a broken weld on the operator mount, or a steel frame that’s rusting through at the bottom rail, we can fabricate and install the replacement. Most BFT welding and fabrication work in Houston runs $350 – $1,400 installed, depending on whether we’re repairing the existing steel in place or building a new component from scratch. We keep raw steel stock, welding rigs, and BFT-specific mounting templates on our trucks so a technician can usually assess the damage, quote the fix, and start work the same visit.
Most owners find out they need this the hard way. The gate starts dragging, or it makes a grinding sound where the actuator arm meets the gate frame. Maybe a weld cracked after years of Houston humidity working on untreated steel. Or a car bumped the gate and now the top hinge is pulling away from the post. By the time you’re standing in the driveway looking at it, you want to know three things: what it costs, how long it takes, and whether it’ll hold. We answer all three before we fire up the welder.
Which BFT Models This Applies To
BFT builds operators for swing gates, slide gates, and barrier arms, and the welding and fabrication work follows the gate type, not just the operator model. The most common jobs we handle in Houston involve BFT swing-gate systems like the Phobos, Rigel, and Deimos lines, where the actuator bracket bolts to a steel gate frame that’s rusting or cracking around the mount. On slide gates, we see BFT Icaro, Maxima, and Tiziano operators paired with steel frames that need new V-groove wheel plates, receiver posts, or end stops welded on.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha: BFT uses standardized mounting-hole patterns depending on whether you have a linear actuator or an articulated arm. A bracket that fits a Phobos BT A25 won’t necessarily line up with an older Phobos N. Before we weld anything, we measure the bracket spacing, check the actuator model plate, and confirm the gate’s swing direction. That step alone catches about two-thirds of the “wrong part” headaches that come from ordering a bracket online without checking.
On the OEM-versus-aftermarket question: BFT’s OEM brackets and gate hardware are well made, but for welding work specifically, the quality of the steel and the weld matters more than whose name is stamped on it. We often cut and form new brackets from 1/4-inch steel plate right on the job, drilled to match your exact BFT pattern. It costs less than sourcing an OEM bracket, holds up better in Houston’s humidity, and we guarantee it for 365 days just the same. We also carry parts for LiftMaster, Mighty Mule, and Ghost Controls, so if you’ve got a mixed-property situation, we can usually handle the whole fence line in one trip.

Signs Your BFT Welding & Fabrication Is Failing
- The gate sags at the hinge side. This usually means the weld at the hinge post or the hinge barrel itself is fatiguing. In Houston, the cycle of hot, wet summers and occasional cold snaps causes steel to expand and contract enough that welds at stress points crack over three to five years.
- The actuator mount is loose or visibly cracked. BFT swing actuators push hard against their brackets every single cycle. If the bracket develops hairline cracks, you’ll see the actuator shudder when the gate starts moving, and the crack widens fast once it starts.
- The gate makes a sharp metal-on-metal squeal. That’s often a V-groove wheel or a guide roller running against rusted or deformed track. The fix may be as simple as grinding the track clean, or it may mean cutting out the damaged section and welding in fresh steel.
- There’s rust bleeding through the paint at the bottom rail. Houston gates sit close to the ground, and standing water after heavy rain means the bottom few inches of the frame rot from the inside out. By the time you see the rust, the metal is usually thin enough to poke a screwdriver through.
- The gate bangs or overshoots when it closes. If the end-stop plate on a slide gate has broken off or a weld on the receiver post has let go, the gate slams instead of stopping. That impact damage accelerates every other failure, so it’s worth addressing quickly.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
Here’s what we quote in the Houston market, parts and labor together, in writing before any work starts:
- Weld a cracked hinge or bracket (single point): $150 – $300
- Fabricate and install a new actuator mounting bracket: $350 – $650
- Replace a rusted bottom rail section on a swing or slide gate: $500 – $900 depending on gate length and steel gauge
- Build and install a new steel gate frame (no operator): $900 – $1,400 depending on size and style
What drives the range is mainly two things: steel gauge and access. A light-duty residential gate made from 16-gauge tube runs on the lower end. A heavy slide gate with 12-gauge or 1/4-inch plate runs higher. If the gate is off its track and we have to wrestle it back into position just to assess the damage, that labor is part of the quote, not an add-on surprise.
Every quote includes the Kingswell Guarantee in writing: the price is fixed before the welder is lit, the arrival window is a real one, the job site gets cleaned up after, and the repair carries a written 365-day guarantee. If a weld fails or a bracket cracks inside that year, we come back and fix it at no charge under our 365-Day Done Right Promise.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely check a few things yourself. Look for visible cracks at the hinge points and actuator mounts. Push gently on the gate at the bottom rail to see how much play there is. Take photos of any rust-through or cracked welds so you can describe what you’re seeing when you call. That’s useful information, and it helps us give you a ballpark range over the phone.
But welding on a gate that’s under tension from its own weight is a different animal. The gate frame can shift when you cut out a rusted section, and if the operator is still connected, the gate can move unexpectedly once a weld lets go. We use clamps, supports, and proper grounding so the gate stays put and nobody gets hurt. Welding on galvanized steel also produces fumes you don’t want to breathe without proper ventilation and a respirator. If you’ve never welded, this isn’t the place to learn on a gate that weighs 400 pounds.
If you’d rather have it done right the first time, call us at (325) 378-0676. As Dean Prescott puts it: “Tell me what the gate is doing – or not doing – and I’ll give you a real number before I ever touch a wrench.”
FAQs
Properly welded and primed steel work on a BFT gate should last 7 – 10 years in Houston before it needs attention again, with two exceptions: bottom rails that sit in standing water may need work in 3 – 5 years, and welds at hinge stress points may fatigue in 5 – 7 years on high-cycle gates. We use cold-galv primer and paint-matched topcoats on every weld to slow the rust. For a free estimate on your specific gate, call (325) 378-0676.
Yes, and that’s the most common job we do. A single cracked weld at a hinge or bracket can usually be ground back, re-welded, and gusseted for extra strength in under an hour. The exception is when the surrounding steel is too thin to hold a weld, like a bottom rail that’s rusted through, in which case we cut out the section and weld in new steel. Either way, we’ll show you the damage before we touch it and quote the repair option side by side with replacement.
Most single-point weld repairs and bracket fabrications are done the same day, usually in 1 – 2 hours on site. A full bottom-rail replacement or a new gate frame takes 3 – 5 hours depending on size, and if powder coating is needed, that requires a separate shop visit. We’ll give you a time estimate in writing along with the price before you commit to anything.
For welding and fabrication work, we don’t need to order much. We carry steel plate, tube, angle iron, cold-galv primer, and paint on the trucks, along with BFT bracket templates for the most common Phobos, Rigel, Deimos, Icaro, and Tiziano models in Houston. If a specialized BFT component does need to be ordered, we’ll tell you the lead time up front and give you the option to wait or go with a fabricated equivalent.
