Elite Access Control Installation: The Houston Owner’s Guide

Elite access control installation in Houston typically runs $450 to $1,100 installed, depending on whether you need a new keypad, card reader, or a full system with intercom and power supply. We stock Elite-compatible parts on the truck and can usually handle most access control swaps the same day we diagnose the failure. Most owners find out their access control has failed the hard way: they punch in the code, hear a click or nothing at all, and the gate doesn’t move, or a tenant calls and says the card reader just beeps and does nothing.

At Portcullis Gate Repair Houston, we’ve been working Elite operators and their access control systems across Houston since 2008. What follows is everything we’ve learned about matching the right Elite access control parts to the right system, so you’re not paying for parts you don’t need or waiting on a part that was ordered wrong.

Which Elite Models This Applies To

Elite access control systems come in two main flavors: the SL series slide gate operators and the CSW series swing gate operators. The SL-3000 and SL-4000 slide operators, along with the CSW-200 and CSW-400 swing operators, are the models we see most often in Houston’s older master-planned subdivisions and newer custom home builds alike. The access control component on these systems is the external receiver unit, usually mounted on a gooseneck pedestal or a brick column near the driveway. That receiver is what talks to your keypad, card reader, or remote, and it’s the part that fails most often.

The gotcha with Elite is matching the receiver’s frequency and protocol. Older Elite units from before roughly 2012 use a 318 MHz frequency on single-channel receivers, while newer units run on 315 MHz with rolling code encryption. If you buy a new keypad and it’s speaking a different language than the receiver, you’ll swear the keypad is broken when it’s actually a compatibility miss. That’s the kind of detail we check before we ever order a part. On the OEM versus aftermarket question: we generally recommend OEM Elite receivers and control boards for the core logic because aftermarket boards can drift on timing and send the gate hunting for limits it should already know. For keypads and card readers, there are solid aftermarket equivalents from DoorKing and Linear that work fine with Elite receivers, and that’s an honest way to save $100 or more without cutting corners on the part that matters.

Signs Your Elite Access Control Installation Is Failing

  • Keypad accepts the code, gate doesn’t move. The keypad is sending signal, but the receiver isn’t passing the open command to the operator board. Nine times out of ten it’s a failing receiver relay or a power supply that’s sagging under load.
  • Card reader beeps but nothing happens. This usually points to a card reader that lost its programming, or a receiver board that no longer reads the Wiegand signal correctly. We see this after power surges, which Houston’s summer lightning storms produce in abundance.
  • Gate opens on its own or won’t close fully. A receiver board with a sticking relay can send phantom open commands. It’s not a haunted gate; it’s a $4 relay that failed on a $200 board.
  • Entry pad works, but the intercom has no audio. The access control power supply has a separate audio feed, and that leg fails independently. You’ll get gate function but zero voice, which is a problem if deliveries or visitors need to reach the house.
  • Signal strength fades over a few weeks. If your remote has to be closer and closer to the receiver, the receiver’s antenna or RF front end is degrading. In Houston’s humidity, corrosion on the antenna connection is a common culprit.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Here’s what Elite access control installation actually costs in Houston, parts and labor included:

  • Receiver board replacement: $280 – $450 installed, depending on which Elite receiver series you have.
  • Keypad replacement (OEM Elite or equivalent): $180 – $320 installed, including programming the new unit to your receiver.
  • Card reader replacement: $200 – $400 installed, including re-adding existing cards to the new reader.
  • Full access control retrofit (receiver, keypad, power supply): $650 – $1,100 installed, which is the right move if two or more parts failed at once or the system is over 12 years old.

Every one of those numbers is a written price you get before we order a part or turn a screw. The range exists because of wire conditions, distance from the receiver to the house, and whether the old wiring is salvageable. What’s included every time: the part, the labor, programming, testing, and our 365-Day Done Right Promise in writing on the invoice. If that new receiver fails inside a year, you call us and we come back and fix it at no charge. That’s the Kingswell Guarantee, and it applies to every Elite access control job we do in Houston.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s a safe middle ground with Elite access control. What you can do yourself: check that the keypad has power, verify the breaker isn’t tripped, and look for obvious damage from a recent storm. What you should not do: open the receiver housing and start pulling wires or swapping boards while the system is live. Access control systems run on 12 to 24 volts DC, which won’t throw you across the yard, but a wrong connection on a control board can fry the very part you’re trying to save, turning a $300 job into a $900 job. Houston’s humidity also plays a role: we regularly open receiver boxes in Sugar Land and Memorial with corroded wire nuts and green terminals, and the failure was accelerated because water got in and sat there. If you’re comfortable checking power and reading voltage, fine. If the symptom is intermittent or the system is over a decade old, that’s when you call us at (325) 378-0676 and let Dean Prescott’s crew pin it down in one visit.
