If your BFT gate is sagging, grinding, or binding mid-swing, the hinge and roller assembly is usually the culprit. We stock BFT-compatible hinge and roller parts on our trucks across Houston, and most replacements run $285 – $640 installed depending on gate weight, hinge style, and whether the post has shifted. Same-day service is available in most cases because we carry the common sizes in our Houston service vehicles.
What usually brings a BFT owner to this page is a gate that worked fine for years, then started dragging at the latch end or squealing like a freight train at 6 a.m. The hinge wears, the roller flattens on one side, and suddenly the gate doesn’t swing the way it used to. That’s the part we’re talking about here, and we can fix it the same day in most Houston neighborhoods.
Portcullis Gate Repair Houston is an independent service provider. We are not affiliated with BFT, but we service BFT operators and hardware daily.
Which BFT Models This Applies To
BFT hinge and roller hardware shows up across the swing-gate line, including the popular BFT Deimos, BFT Phobos, and BFT Kustos series. The hinge itself is usually a post-mount or surface-mount cast steel assembly, while the roller is a urethane or phenolic wheel on a steel bracket that rides the bottom track or supports the gate end. If you have a BFT slide gate, the rollers are a different animal entirely and sit inside a track box.
The compatibility gotcha we see most often in Houston is v-groove vs. flat-groove rollers. A BFT slide gate built with v-groove wheels needs v-groove replacements. A flat wheel on a v-track will chatter, wear the track, and fail again inside a year. Take a photo of the roller edge before you order anything. If you can see a visible V shape cut into the wheel face, that’s your answer.
On the OEM vs aftermarket question: BFT-branded hinges are quality castings, but for a lot of older models the OEM part has been discontinued or sits in a warehouse with a 4-week lead time. In that case, a quality aftermarket hinge from a US distributor gets the gate back in service faster, and we’ve had good longevity with those when the mating surfaces are prepped right. We’ll tell you honestly which way to go on your specific model, because the wrong hinge geometry, even by a quarter inch, changes the swing arc and puts stress on the operator arm.

Signs Your BFT Hinge & Roller Replacement Is Failing
- The gate sags at the free end. The top hinge wears and the leaf drops. The latch no longer lines up with the strike plate, and you may be forcing the gate by hand to get it closed. That sag is the hinge pin and bushing wearing out from years of Houston humidity and heat cycles.
- You hear a shrieking or grinding noise mid-travel. A roller with flat spots or a seized bearing screams as the gate moves. If the noise gets worse when the gate is under load, the roller is shot, not the operator.
- The gate hesitates or stalls partway through its arc. A galled hinge pin or a broken roller bracket adds enough friction that the BFT operator’s motor amps spike. The board may sense the overload and stop the gate.
- The gate shakes or bounces as it moves. When a roller flattens or the bracket loosens on the post, the gate loses support mid-cycle and bucks. You’ll feel it in the operator arm, and left alone it cracks welds.
- You can see the wear with your own eyes. Roller wheels with visible flat spots, hairline cracks radiating from the axle, or a groove worn deeper than 1/8 inch are done. A hinge with rust pitting where the pin enters the barrel is close behind.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
For BFT hinge and roller replacement in Houston, here’s the plain-number breakdown from our invoices:
- Single bottom hinge replacement: $185 – $290 parts and labor
- Full hinge set (top and bottom): $350 – $520 parts and labor
- Gate roller assembly replacement: $220 – $410 parts and labor
- Hinge set plus roller, complete: $400 – $640 parts and labor
- Heavy-duty or custom fabrication: quoted after we see the gate
The range depends on gate weight and size, whether the post needs shimming or re-anchoring, and whether you choose OEM BFT parts or a quality aftermarket equivalent. Every estimate is written before any bolt comes off, so there’s no surprise at the end. If we find additional damage once the gate is open, we stop, show you what we found, and quote the additional work before we do anything else. Our repair carries the 365-Day Done Right Promise in writing: if the hinge or roller fails inside that year, we come back and make it right at no charge.
DIY or Call Us?
There’s a safe middle ground and a not-safe middle ground here. What you can safely do yourself: photograph the hinge and roller, check for visible flat spots and rust, and test whether the gate leaf wiggles when you push on it laterally. That tells you whether the hinge is loose or the roller is worn. What you shouldn’t do yourself: unbolt a loaded hinge on a 400-pound BFT gate. The moment the lower hinge breaks free, that gate becomes a lever and your body is the fulcrum. Crushed hands and fingers are the most common injury we hear about, and they happen fast.
We’ve been doing this long enough to know which jobs genuinely need a truck and which don’t. If you’ve got a clearly failed hinge and a plan, we’ll sell you the part and tell you exactly how to check the post and the swing arc. If it’s anything even close to a loaded gate, call us at (325) 378-0676 and let a background-checked, uniformed Portcullis tech handle it.
FAQs
In Houston’s heat and humidity, BFT hinges and rollers usually last 5 to 9 years before they need replacement. Rollers on unshaded south-facing gates fail earlier because the urethane hardens and cracks in direct sun. If your gate faces south and gets full afternoon heat, expect the shorter end of that range.
Sometimes. If the hinge pin is the only worn component and the barrel is sound, we can press in a new pin and re-bush the hinge for less than a full replacement. If the hinge barrel is wallowed out or the casting has cracked from metal fatigue, the hinge needs to be replaced whole. We’ll show you what we’re seeing before we recommend a path.
Most BFT hinge and roller replacements take 1 to 2 hours on site. The job involves unloading the gate, removing the old hardware, prepping and shimming the post if needed, and hanging the gate with fine adjustment to the swing arc. If the post has shifted and needs concrete work, that’s a second, scheduled visit.
Yes. We carry the common BFT hinge pin sizes, surface-mount hinge sets, and both flat and v-groove rollers on our Houston service vehicles. We also stock replacement hardware for LiftMaster, Mighty Mule, and Ghost Controls gates. Tell me what the gate is doing, or not doing, and we’ll give you a real number before we ever touch a wrench.
If your BFT gate is sagging, grinding, or fighting you at the latch, call (325) 378-0676 today. We’ll give you a written price before any work starts and stand behind the repair for a full year.
