DoorKing Welding & Fabrication: The Houston Owner’s Guide

DoorKing welding and fabrication work in Houston typically runs $275 to $750 installed, depending on whether we’re reinforcing a cracked gate frame, rebuilding a hinge mount, or fabricating a custom bracket for an operator. We stock common DoorKing-compatible steel repair plates and hinge weldments on our trucks, so most jobs are done same day. The usual discovery is a gate that drags, a hinge that’s pulling loose from the post, or an operator mounting plate that’s sheared after years of Texas wind load.

Most Houston owners notice it first as a screech or a sag. The gate still opens, but it’s working harder than it should, and the operator is fighting steel that’s no longer square. By the time you see a crack running from the hinge weld, the failure has been developing for months. That’s when a repair that could have been a $200 reinforcement becomes a $600 rebuild.

Which DoorKing Models This Applies To

We do welding and fabrication work on the full DoorKing residential and light-commercial lineup: the 6002 and 6003 slide gate operators, 6300 series swing actuators, 9150 series barrier gates, and the older 1601 and 1602 models still running in Houston neighborhoods from Meyerland to Kingwood. The work generally falls into four categories: gate frame repair (cracked welds, bent pickets, sagging rails), hinge and post fabrication (pulling old hinges, welding new ones, rebuilding post caps), operator mounting (fabricating riser plates and pedestal adapters when the original mounting won’t line up), and custom brackets for loop detectors, photo eyes, and edge sensors.

The key compatibility issue with DoorKing is the mounting footprint. DoorKing operators use a specific bolt pattern and standoff distance that doesn’t always match what’s left on the gate after a decade of repairs. If someone welded a universal plate on there during a previous fix, the operator may sit a half-inch off where it should, and that’s what shears the drive hardware. We measure the mounting surface and match the plate to the specific operator model before cutting any steel. When it comes to OEM versus aftermarket for fabricated steel parts, most of what we supply is shop-made or sourced from Texas fabrication suppliers. DoorKing itself sells replacement frames and mounting kits, but for a 12-year-old gate in the Houston humidity, a locally fabricated 3/16-inch steel plate with a quality weld usually outlasts OEM.

Signs Your DoorKing Welding & Fabrication Is Failing

  • The gate sags visibly on the latch end. A quarter-inch of sag at the free end translates to a hinge that’s already wallowed out or a weld that’s cracked underneath. The operator is now lifting and pushing at the same time, which burns motors fast.
  • You hear a sharp pop or crack when the gate changes direction. That’s a broken weld flexing. The two steel surfaces are still touching, so it works, but every cycle peels the joint further apart.
  • The operator mounting plate has visible rust blooming around the bolt heads. Houston’s humidity and occasional salt air near the Ship Channel accelerates this badly. The rust you can see is usually hiding a stress crack you can’t.
  • The gate scrapes the driveway in one spot every cycle. A wheel that’s worn flat or a hinge that’s shifted means the weight isn’t distributed anymore. The welded joints take all the strain, and one of them will be the first to go.
  • The gap between gate and post changes through the swing. That’s a hinge pin failing or a weld stretching. Once a hinge moves, the gate’s entire arc changes, and the operator’s limit switches can’t be set reliably.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Most DoorKing welding and fabrication repairs in Houston fall between $275 and $750 installed. On the low end, that’s a single cracked weld re-worked, ground smooth, and painted. On the high end, it’s a full hinge rebuild on a heavy driveway gate where we’re cutting out the old hinges, fabricating new ones, and re-hanging the gate to spec. A typical mid-range job, say a cracked frame rail on a 6002 slide gate, runs $350 to $450 including steel, welding time, and touch-up paint.

Every quote includes the steel, the welding consumables, the labor, and a cleanup pass on the surrounding area. What drives the range is gate weight, access, and how much of the old fabrication can be salvaged. If the base steel is still strong, we weld to it. If it’s rotted from the inside out, we replace the section. You get the number before we start, and it’s the number on the invoice. Under the Kingswell Guarantee, the fabrication work is covered for 365 days from the repair date, in writing.

DIY or Call Us?

If you can safely lift a flap on the operator and inspect the mounting bolts and hinges, that’s worth doing. Look for rust trails, cracks, and fresh metal showing through paint. What you shouldn’t do is attempt to weld your own gate frame. Gate steel is under load even when the operator is off, and a bad weld on a 600-pound gate is a real hazard. High-tension swing hardware and slide gate rollers carry enough stored force that a failed weld can throw the gate off its track entirely.

Welding on or near an installed operator also risks frying the control board if the ground clamp placement is wrong. We see it a couple times a year in Houston, a homeowner who saved $200 on a bracket and spent $500 on a new board. If the part is cracked, sagging, or pulling loose, call (325) 378-0676. We’ll give you a straight price range over the phone before anyone drives out.
