An Elite gate motor replacement in Houston typically runs $450 to $1,100 installed, depending on the series, motor type, and what the existing wiring looks like. We stock Elite-compatible motors on our trucks and can usually complete the swap the same day we diagnose it. Most owners call us after the gate starts moving slow, groaning, or stopping halfway, and by then the motor has usually been working against a failing capacitor or worn limit cams for months. Dean Prescott likes to say it plainly: “Tell me what the gate is doing, or not doing, and I’ll give you a real number before I ever touch a wrench.”
Before we get to pricing, one thing worth knowing: Elite is a solid brand, but its motors are not all interchangeable. The SL-3000 slide-gate operator uses a different motor than the Elite swinging actuator, which is the motorized arm that physically pushes a swing gate open. Matching the wrong motor to the right housing will burn out a new part fast, which is exactly the kind of mistake we see after a well-meaning handyman swap.
Which Elite Models This Applies To
We replace motors across the Elite SL-3000, SL-2000, and older SL-1000 slide-gate lines, plus the Elite swinging gate operators like the CSW200, CSW200UL, and the Mirage. If you’re not sure which model you have, open the control box and look for a silver label on the side of the motor or the circuit board. The part number usually starts with an SL or CSW prefix.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha most Houston owners don’t expect: an Elite SL-3000 motor from 2015 will not always drop into a 2020 SL-3000 housing without a mounting plate change. Elite revised the bolt pattern on the motor flange around 2017, so we always check the mount spacing before we order or pull a replacement. It’s a small detail, but it’s the difference between a 90-minute swap and a half-day job.
On the OEM-versus-aftermarket question for Elite specifically: we stock genuine Elite replacement motors and a couple of aftermarket equivalents we trust. The aftermarket motors cost 20 to 30 percent less and carry a one-year manufacturer warranty, but the mounting is not always as clean. For a long fence line on the west side of Houston, where that motor gets hammered by afternoon heat and dust, we usually steer people toward OEM. The extra cost is modest, and the fit is exact. We’ll quote both options in writing, and you pick the one that makes sense for your budget.
Portcullis Gate Repair Houston is an independent service provider. We are not affiliated with Elite or its parent company, but we service Elite operators weekly alongside LiftMaster, Mighty Mule, Ghost Controls, and six other brands.

Signs Your Elite Gate Motor Replacement Is Failing
- The gate hums but doesn’t move. That hum is the motor trying to start against a dead capacitor or a seized gearbox. Replacing the capacitor is cheap, but if it’s been humming for weeks, the motor windings have likely overheated and the motor itself is done.
- The gate opens halfway and stops. On Elite slide gates, this usually points to worn limit cams or a motor that’s losing torque under load. In Houston, heat accelerates this, because the motor runs hotter and the grease in the gearbox thins faster than it should.
- You have to hit the remote two or three times. This is often a sign of failing motor brushes on older DC-motor Elites. The brushes wear down, make intermittent contact, and the motor only catches every other command.
- The gate moves noticeably slower than it did last year. A healthy Elite SL-3000 opens a 14-foot gate in about 15 to 18 seconds. If yours is taking 25 or 30, the motor is losing power and working harder than the drive belt or gearbox was designed for.
- The motor is hot to the touch after a normal cycle. A warm motor is normal. A hot-to-the-touch motor is not. That’s sustained friction inside, and in Houston’s summer months, it will fail sooner rather than later.
None of these signs mean the rest of the operator is scrap. Control boards, chain assemblies, and gearboxes usually outlive the motor itself. We replace just the motor and test the whole system before we leave, so you’re not paying for parts you don’t need.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
Here’s what Elite gate motor replacement costs in the Houston market, parts and labor included:
| Job Type | Typical Installed Price |
|---|---|
| Elite slide-gate motor (SL-3000 class) | $550 – $900 |
| Elite swing-arm actuator motor (CSW200 class) | $450 – $750 |
| Older model Elite motor (SL-1000, discontinued) | $600 – $1,100 |
| Motor plus new capacitor and limit cams | Add $90 – $160 |
What drives the range is straightforward: the motor itself, whether we’re doing a straight swap or fabricating a mounting adapter, and how much of the existing wiring and connectors we can reuse. We give you the total price in writing before any work starts, and that price does not change after we open the control box. Every Elite motor replacement carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise. If the repair fails within that year, we come back and correct it at no charge, and the guarantee is stamped right on the invoice.
DIY or Call Us?
Here’s the honest split. What you can check safely as an owner: whether the breaker is on, whether the gate is physically jammed against the fence or a tree root, and whether the remote battery is dead. Those are three free fixes that cost you nothing.
What you should not attempt yourself: opening an Elite operator and swapping a motor. These motors are wired to capacitors that hold a charge even with the breaker off, and a capacitor discharge across your hand is a genuine injury risk. Beyond that, if you misalign the motor on the gearbox or over-torque the mounting bolts, you can crack the housing or strip the gearbox input shaft, and that’s now a $900 mistake instead of a $650 repair. Safety aside, it’s simply not a beginner-level swap.
If you want to know whether your Elite motor is the actual problem before you spend anything, call us at (325) 378-0676. We’ll talk it through, and if we come out, the diagnostic is part of the written estimate.
FAQs
A properly maintained Elite gate motor in Houston lasts 7 to 10 years on average, but heat and humidity knock a couple years off that compared to cooler climates. Slide-gate motors on long, heavy gates tend to wear out faster than swing-arm actuators because they’re cycling more torque on every open and close. If yours is past the seven-year mark and showing any of the symptoms above, replacement is the more honest fix than another patch job. Call (325) 378-0676 and we’ll give you a straight answer on whether yours is worth saving.
Sometimes, yes. Worn brushes, a dead capacitor, and bad thermal overload switches can be repaired without replacing the whole motor, and those jobs run $120 to $250 in Houston. But if the winding insulation has failed or the armature is scored, repair is throwing good money at a part that’s already on borrowed time. We’ll tell you which path makes sense for your specific motor, and the price is in writing either way.
Most Elite gate motor replacements take 1.5 to 3 hours on-site, from removing the old motor to testing the gate through 5 or 10 full cycles. Discontinued models that need a mounting adapter add about an hour. We arrive with the motor on the truck, so there’s no second visit unless your wiring turns up something unexpected.
Yes. Our Houston trucks carry replacement motors for the Elite SL-3000, SL-2000, CSW200, and CSW200UL lines, plus the common capacitors, limit cams, and mounting plates that go with them. For rare or discontinued Elite motors, we’ll locate the part and schedule the swap before we arrive, so you’re never left with a gate stuck open for days.
