LiftMaster Keypad & Intercom Repair: The Houston Owner’s Guide

Most LiftMaster keypad and intercom repairs in Houston run between $185 and $440 installed, depending on whether we’re wiring in a new keypad, replacing an intercom board, or swapping both units together. We keep LiftMaster-compatible keypads and intercom modules on our trucks across Houston, so the majority of these jobs are one visit, done same-day. You’ll usually notice the failure when the keypad stops accepting your code, the intercom goes silent on one end, or the gate opens fine from the remote but ignores the keypad entirely. That’s the classic tell: remote works, keypad doesn’t, and the problem is almost always at the keypad, the wiring, or the control board input, not the gate operator itself.

We’re Portcullis Gate Repair Houston, an independent service provider, not affiliated with LiftMaster. We’ve been working on LiftMaster-equipped gates across the city since 2008, and Dean Prescott, our owner, still quotes every keypad and intercom job the same way he did day one: a real dollar range before any parts come off the truck.

Which LiftMaster Models This Applies To

LiftMaster keypads fall into a few families, and they are not as interchangeable as the online listings suggest. The 387LM and 877LM universal keypads cover most residential swing and slide gates from the last decade and tend to pair without issue. The older 976LM and 377LM keypads are the ones we see on gates built from about 2008 to 2015, and a surprising number of Houston homeowners try to swap in a newer universal keypad and find it won’t talk to an older operator’s receiver. LiftMaster changed wireless encoding on some gate operators around the mid-2000s, which is one of those compatibility gotchas that doesn’t show up in the owner’s manual. If your operator has a purple or yellow learn button, it speaks a different language than the older red-button receivers. Matching the keypad to the receiver, not just the brand name, is what makes the repair stick.

Intercom modules like the LiftMaster LMKP and wired call stations used on multi-tenant and estate gates are a different animal. They run on low-voltage wiring back to the operator board, and in Houston’s heat and humidity, the terminals on those boards corrode faster than the components themselves fail. We see it regularly in neighborhoods like Meyerland and Spring Branch, where older buried wiring soaks up groundwater every time a summer storm rolls through. Before we recommend a new intercom, we check the board terminals and the wire condition with a meter, because bolting a new keypad onto corroded terminals is how you end up paying for the same repair twice.

Signs Your LiftMaster Keypad & Intercom Repair Is Failing

  • Keypad accepts the code but the gate doesn’t move. This usually points to the keypad sending a signal the receiver isn’t decoding properly, or a failed relay on the operator board’s accessory input. The keypad itself may be fine.
  • Buttons work only in dry weather. Moisture gets into the keypad housing through a hairline crack or worn gasket. Houston’s humidity does the rest. We replace the keypad housing, not just the buttons, when we see this.
  • Intercom buzzes or crackles from the house unit. That’s typically a wiring issue, not the intercom module. A short in the buried line or a corroded splice causes feedback and low, scratchy audio.
  • Some buttons respond, others don’t. Keypad membranes wear unevenly. The numbers you use most, often a 1 and a 7, go first. Rebuilding the pad isn’t worth it on LiftMaster units; replacement is cheaper and lasts.
  • Keypad lights up but nothing else happens. On LiftMaster keypads the backlight runs on its own circuit. When the main board fails, the light can still glow. It’s a misleading half-dead symptom we’ve seen enough times in Houston to check every time.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A LiftMaster-compatible wireless keypad installed in Houston typically runs $185 to $310 parts and labor, depending on whether we’re matching an older receiver or programming a universal model. A wired intercom station or intercom board replacement runs $240 to $440, and that wider range reflects wire condition, distance from the house, and whether we’re repairing terminals at the operator as well. When both the keypad and the intercom have failed, most Houston jobs land around $340 to $550 for the full repair.

Every quote is written down before we start, so the number we give you is the number on the invoice. That’s the Kingswell Guarantee, and it applies to every Portcullis location, including ours here in Houston. The repair itself is guaranteed in writing for 365 days under our 365-Day Done Right Promise. If the keypad or intercom repair fails inside that year, we return and fix it at no charge.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely check a few things before calling. Confirm the keypad has fresh batteries, if it uses them. Clean the button contacts with a dry cloth. Make sure the wiring at the keypad hasn’t been pulled loose by a weed trimmer. Low-voltage keypad and intercom wiring is not dangerous to touch, so you can also check for an obvious corroded wire or a cracked keypad housing. What we don’t recommend is opening the operator cabinet and probing the control board with a multimeter if you’re not comfortable reading low-voltage circuits. A short across the wrong terminals can take out a receiver board that’s a couple hundred dollars to replace. When in doubt, our techs will have it sorted in one visit. Tell me what the gate is doing, or not doing, and I’ll give you a real number before I ever touch a wrench.

If the keypad is dead or the intercom crackles, call (325) 378-0676 and we’ll get it diagnosed and priced.
