Get your free estimateLinear Gate Motor Replacement: The Houston Owner’s Guide
We stock and install Linear-compatible gate motor replacements across Houston, with most residential swing-gate motor swaps running $650 to $1,200 installed, parts and labor included. Slide-gate Linear replacements typically land between $850 and $1,400 depending on horsepower and whether we’re also replacing the drive chain or gear rack. You’ll usually know the motor has failed before we confirm it: the gate hums but doesn’t move, trips its breaker repeatedly, or opens halfway and quits with the operator clicking.
That clicking sound is the motor trying to engage and failing, either because the capacitor has given out or the internal gear train has stripped. In Houston’s humidity, we also see corrosion on the motor’s electrical terminals take down otherwise healthy Linear units faster than owners expect. Call us at (325) 378-0676 and describe what the gate is doing, or not doing, and we’ll give you a real dollar range before we ever touch a wrench.
Which Linear Models This Applies To
Linear’s residential lineup breaks into three families that matter for replacement parts: the LDO series (linear drive operators for swing gates), the SL series (slide-gate operators), and the more recent APeX models. The LDO50 and LDO75 are the most common swing-gate motors we replace in Houston neighborhoods like Meyerland, Kingwood, and Clear Lake. The SL1 and SL2 cover most slide applications. If your Linear operator is older than about 2012, you may have an original Linear LD or LS model, and the motor from a newer LDO or SL will often fit with a mounting-plate adapter.
The fastest way to identify what you have is to look for the metal data plate on the operator housing. It lists the model number, voltage (115V or 230V), and horsepower, usually in raised lettering. Photograph that plate before you call anyone. A compatibility gotcha with Linear that we see often in Houston: the LDO motors shipped in 230V configurations for some gate installs, and a 115V replacement motor bolted into a 230V unit will burn out within a day. That’s why we always verify the data plate before ordering or pulling a part off the truck.
On OEM versus aftermarket: we install genuine Linear parts when the operator is under any kind of coverage or when the homeowner prefers factory components, but we also carry quality aftermarket motors that match Linear’s mounting dimensions and torque specs. Those aftermarket units can save $150 to $300 on parts and we’ve had strong results with them for years. We’ll show you both prices in writing before we order anything.
Styles & brands we work with

Signs Your Linear Gate Motor Replacement Is Failing
- Humming with no movement. The motor’s capacitor has failed or the start winding is shot. The operator is getting power but the motor can’t begin its rotation. This is the most common failure we see on Linear LDO units in Houston after five to eight years.
- Gate opens a foot and stops. The motor’s thermal overload is tripping because the armature is drawing too much current. Sometimes it’s a failing motor; sometimes it’s a gate that has gotten harder to move, which forces the motor to work against resistance until it overheats.
- Operator clicks but the gate stays put. The motor’s internal gear train or the drive spindle has stripped. The motor spins, but the force never reaches the gate. This is a mechanical failure inside the sealed motor housing and warrants replacement rather than repair.
- Circuit breaker trips every time the gate runs. The motor windings are shorting or pulling excessive amperage. A healthy Linear motor on a balanced gate should draw well under its rated load. Repeated breaker trips mean the motor is failing internally.
- Gate runs slow and labors even in cool weather. In Houston, heat makes this symptom worse each summer. The motor is losing torque and will eventually stall entirely. Catching it now means a scheduled swap instead of a gate stuck open on a Sunday night.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
For a Linear gate motor replacement in Houston, budget roughly $650 to $1,200 for most swing-gate operators installed, and $850 to $1,400 for slide-gate motors. The spread comes down to three things: which Linear model you have, whether we’re replacing just the motor or the motor plus the drive chain or gear rack, and whether the operator is 115V or 230V, which affects the cost of the replacement motor itself.
Our price includes the motor, all mounting hardware, wiring connections, limit setup, and a full cycle test. We quote a written price before any work begins, and that’s the number on the invoice when we’re done, no exceptions. Every Linear motor replacement carries the 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the motor or the install fails inside a year, we come back and fix it at no charge. That’s in writing on your invoice, stamped with the Kingswell Guarantee.
DIY or Call Us?
Some things on a gate are worth checking yourself before you call: is the operator getting power, is the breaker flipped, are the safety photo eyes clean and aligned? Those are safe to inspect. But a Linear gate motor replacement is not a casual driveway repair. These motors run on 115V or 230V line voltage, and those connections are inside the operator housing where a misplaced wire can energize the whole gate frame. If you’re not fully comfortable working on live electrical, leave the housing closed.
The other reason we get called after a DIY attempt: the motor was replaced but the gate’s limit settings were never reprogrammed, so the new motor slams the gate into the end stops until it destroys itself. Setting Linear limits properly takes an understanding of how the motor’s internal cam limiters work, which differs between LDO and SL models. If the gate is stuck and you’re in Houston, call (325) 378-0676. We’ll get a tech out, identify the exact failure, and give you a written price before we turn a single screw.
FAQs
Most Linear gate motors in Houston last 7 to 10 years with regular use, though Houston’s humidity and summer heat knock a year or two off that compared to drier climates. Coastal areas near Galveston Bay tend to see more corrosion on motor terminals and shorter lifespans, closer to 6 to 8 years. If your Linear is past year 8 and showing any of the symptoms above, plan for replacement rather than waiting for a full failure. Call (325) 378-0676 for an inspection and a straight answer on how much life is left.
Sometimes, but not often. A failed capacitor is a $40 to $80 fix and worth doing. A stripped internal gear or shorted motor winding means the sealed motor assembly has failed, and Linear doesn’t sell internal components separately, so replacement is the only reliable fix. We’ll always tell you which situation you have and quote both options if a repair is realistic.
Most swing-gate Linear motor replacements take 2 to 3 hours on site, and slide-gate swaps run 3 to 4 hours. If we’re also replacing the chain or gear rack, add an hour. We show up with the common Linear motors and mounting hardware already on the truck, so there’s usually no second visit to wait on parts. Call (325) 378-0676 to schedule a window that works for you.
We keep a range of Linear-compatible motors on the truck for the LDO and SL series, plus common capacitor and limit-switch parts. For less common configurations, like 230V LDO75s, we may need a day or two to bring the part in from our Houston supplier. We’ll tell you before you book whether your motor is a truck part or an order part, so there are no surprises on install day. We also stock parts for LiftMaster, Mighty Mule, and Ghost Controls operators if you’re working with more than one brand on the property.
