Linear hinge and roller replacement in Houston typically runs $185 – $420 parts and labor, depending on your gate’s size, weight, and how many hinges or rollers need swapping. We stock Linear-compatible hinges and rollers on our trucks, so most jobs are done the same day we arrive. Most owners discover the problem the same way: the gate starts dragging on the close cycle, squeals when it moves, or leaves a visible wear line across the driveway where the bottom edge has been scraping. By the time you hear it, the roller is usually past saving.
Tell me what the gate is doing – or not doing – and I’ll give you a real number before I ever touch a wrench.
Which Linear Models This Applies To
Linear gates use two distinct roller systems, and they are not interchangeable. Linear slide gates (the L-Series and SL-Series, common on longer Houston driveways and commercial fence lines) ride on steel V-groove wheels that track along a ground rail. Linear cantilever gates use a different setup entirely: two sets of rollers that carry the gate from above and below, with no ground track to clog.
The compatibility gotcha we see constantly in Houston: the L-Series slide gate wheels come in 4-inch and 6-inch diameters, and the wheel bracket bolt pattern changed between older and newer production runs. If you buy by brand name alone, you can end up with a wheel that doesn’t center on the rail. We match by measuring the actual wheel diameter and the bracket spacing on-site. For cantilever gates, the upper guide rollers and lower support rollers are sized by gate panel width and weight, not just model number.
On the hinge side, Linear swing gates (the SL and SW lines) use steel barrel hinges with greasable zerks on the better models. When the original hinge is worn, we replace with OEM Linear hinges when available, but we also carry a heavier-duty aftermarket hinge that fits the same bolt pattern and adds a second grease point. We’ll show you both and quote the difference. The aftermarket option often makes more sense on a Houston gate that’s been through six summers of humidity and one or two floods.
Portcullis Gate Repair Houston is an independent service provider. We’re not affiliated with Linear, but we service Linear operators and hardware daily, along with LiftMaster, Mighty Mule, Ghost Controls, and the rest of the nine brands we keep parts for.

Signs Your Linear Hinge & Roller Replacement Is Failing
- The gate leans or sags at the latch end. This almost always means a hinge pin or hinge barrel is worn egg-shaped. On a Linear swing gate, the hinge takes the full hanging weight of the gate leaf, and once the pin wears, the gate drops and the latch stops lining up. You’ll see a fresh mark on the post where the latch used to catch.
- A grinding or metallic scraping sound when the gate moves. On slide gates, this is the V-groove wheel rolling on a flat spot or fighting a bent rail. The wheel is chewing itself down. On swing gates, it’s usually the hinge pin dragging dry inside the barrel.
- The gate rocks side to side as it opens or closes. Cantilever gates do this when the lower support rollers wear unevenly or the roller brackets loosen. Linear cantilever systems are sensitive to roller bearing play of even 1/8 inch. Houston’s clay soil shifts with rain and drought, which accelerates this.
- Visible flat spots or cracks on the wheel surface. A V-groove wheel with a flat spot thumps every rotation, and every thump hammers the rail joint. Left alone, it beats the rail out of alignment, which turns a $200 roller job into a rail repair too.
- The gate motor struggles or trips its thermal overload. When a hinge binds or a roller won’t turn freely, the Linear operator has to push harder. The motor gets hot, the amp draw climbs, and the control board may throw a force error. If the operator is working harder than it should, check the hinge and roller first before blaming the motor.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
Here’s what Linear hinge and roller work costs in Houston, parts and labor included:
- Single slide-gate V-groove roller replacement: $95 – $145 per wheel, including the wheel, bearing, and bracket adjustment.
- Full slide gate roller set (two or four wheels, depending on gate weight): $260 – $420.
- Single swing-gate hinge replacement (barrel hinge, pin, and realignment): $120 – $185 per hinge.
- Cantilever gate roller replacement (roller pair, top and bottom): $180 – $340, with the lower support rollers on the higher end when they’re seized.
What drives the range: gate weight, whether the hinges are welded or bolted, whether the rail needs straightening, and whether we’re doing one roller or a full set. On every job, you get a written price before any work starts. That price is the price. The Kingswell Guarantee covers every replacement for 365 days, written on the invoice. If a hinge or roller we install fails inside that year, we come back and fix it at no charge under the 365-Day Done Right Promise.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely check a few things yourself. On a slide gate, look at the wheels: do they still have a V profile, or are they worn flat? Are the brackets tight? On a swing gate, grab the gate near the latch and lift up. If there’s play at the hinge, the pin is worn. Those checks cost you nothing and take two minutes.
This is where DIY goes sideways: the hinge and roller are what keep a several-hundred-pound gate attached to its post and on its rail. When you unbolt a hinge or jack up a gate to swap a roller, all that weight needs to be supported properly. One slipped jack and you’ve got a gate on the ground, or worse, on you. A V-groove roller under tension from a misaligned gate can kick when the bracket loosens. We recommend a trained professional for any roller or hinge removal under load. That’s not upselling. That’s what we tell our own neighbors.

FAQs
In Houston’s heat and humidity, you can expect 5 to 8 years from standard Linear rollers and 7 to 10 from greasable barrel hinges before wear becomes visible. Coastal-adjacent or flood-prone areas trend toward the shorter end. If your gate runs 20 or more cycles a day, plan for the lower number. Call (325) 378-0676 and we can inspect yours and tell you what’s left in it.
Generally no. A worn hinge pin can sometimes be re-greased to buy a few weeks, but once the barrel is egged out or the wheel has a flat spot, the part is done. Rebuilding a sealed roller bearing isn’t cost-effective compared to a quality replacement. We’ll always show you the worn part and explain what we’re seeing before we quote the swap.
Most single-roller or single-hinge swaps on a Linear gate take 45 to 90 minutes once we’re on-site. A full roller set with rail adjustment on a long slide gate may take half a day. We’ll confirm a real arrival window when you book, and we show up in it.
Yes. We carry the common 4-inch and 6-inch V-groove wheels, cantilever roller sets, and greasable barrel hinges in the truck, along with the bracket hardware. If you have an unusual Linear model, we’ll verify what you have before we come out so we’re not standing in your driveway empty-handed. Call (325) 378-0676 for a free estimate.
