Linear Keypad & Intercom Repair: The Houston Owner’s Guide

We stock and install Linear-compatible keypads and intercoms across Houston, and most repairs run $245 – $520 installed, including the new part and the labor to wire it in and test it. We can typically get a technician to your driveway the same day you call, with the right Linear part already on the truck. The way most homeowners find us: the keypad lights up but won’t trip the gate, or the intercom rings through but the voice sounds like it’s underwater, or the whole unit went dark after a good Houston rainstorm. Whatever the symptom, here’s the page that explains exactly what’s wrong, what it costs to fix, and when you should stop fighting it yourself.

Which Linear Models This Applies To

If your gate opener or access system carries the Linear name, this page covers the keypads and intercom units that pair with it. The big compatibility gotcha with Linear is the generation split: older Linear systems from the 2000s and early 2010s often used the 212i, 232i, or AK-11 keypads with direct-wire connections to the operator board, while newer Linear Pro Access and Linear Classic lines use different wiring and sometimes a different voltage. The surest way to match the part is to look at the sticker on the back of your existing keypad or intercom; there’s a model number there, usually starting with two or three digits followed by a letter, and we can cross-reference that over the phone in about sixty seconds.

For Linear OEM parts versus quality aftermarket equivalents: we stock both, but we’re blunt about the trade-off. A genuine Linear keypad for a Linear Access or Pro Access system typically runs a little more, but the fit and the wire terminals are exactly what the board expects. A good aftermarket keypad can save $40 – $80 and works fine for most direct-wire applications, but we don’t recommend it on systems with encrypted RF or on multi-tenant intercom setups where a mismatch causes flaky call buttons. The same goes for intercoms: Linear models like the MDR or AE series were workhorses, but after 10 – 15 years of Texas heat, the plastic faceplates crack and the speaker cones dry out. We’ll tell you when an OEM replacement makes sense and when the aftermarket part is the smarter spend.

Signs Your Linear Keypad & Intercom Repair Is Failing

  • The keypad lights up, but the gate doesn’t move. This usually means the relay inside the keypad has failed or the wiring between the keypad and the operator board has a break. The keypad still gets power, so it looks alive, but it’s not actually sending the “open” signal anymore.
  • You have to punch the code two or three times before it works. That’s the membrane or the dome switches wearing out underneath the buttons. Houston humidity gets into the keypad housing, and the contacts inside corrode just enough that the first press doesn’t register.
  • The intercom rings, but nobody can hear you clearly, or you can’t hear them. The speaker or microphone in the intercom is failing. On older Linear intercom units, the speaker cone literally dries out and splits after years of sun exposure, especially on west-facing gates.
  • Water or condensation inside the keypad face. The gasket behind the faceplate has given out. Once moisture is inside, the circuit board starts corroding and the keypad is on borrowed time, even if it still works today.
  • The keypad works, but only from certain angles or very close range. On wireless Linear keypads, this points to a weak battery combined with an aged RF transmitter. Sometimes it’s a $4 battery; sometimes the transmitter itself is the issue. Both are fixable.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In Houston, a Linear-compatible keypad replacement runs $245 – $350 installed, which includes the new keypad, the wiring work, programming your existing gate codes into the new unit, and testing the full open-close cycle before we leave. A Linear intercom or intercom-keypad combination runs $380 – $520 installed. The range varies by what we find when we open it up: an existing keypad with good, uncorroded wiring costs less than a job where the old wiring from the house to the gate is baked and brittle. If the cable between the house intercom and the gate keypad needs replacing, that adds $50 – $100 depending on the run length.

Every price we quote is written down before any work starts. No surprises after the unit is disassembled. And every repair carries the 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the keypad or intercom fails within a year of the install, we come back and fix it at no charge. The guarantee is printed on the invoice. It’s not a handshake; it’s a written commitment.

DIY or Call Us?

There are a few things you can safely check on a Linear keypad or intercom before calling us. If the keypad is wireless, try a fresh battery: a surprising number of “dead” gate keypads in Houston are just a $4 battery swap. Check the breaker; gate keypads often share a circuit with landscape lighting or the garage door opener. Look for visible water inside the keypad face. That’s about where the safe list ends.

Actually replacing a Linear keypad or intercom means opening the faceplate, dealing with low-voltage wiring, matching wire gauges and terminals to the operator board, and reprogramming access codes without locking yourself out of the gate. If you get the wiring wrong, you can short out the control board, and that is a far more expensive repair than the keypad itself. Electrical work on an access system isn’t something we recommend doing with a YouTube video in one hand. If the keypad is wired, if it’s an intercom with a power supply, if it’s anything beyond a battery swap, call us at (325) 378-0676. We’ll give you a real dollar range on the phone before a technician ever shows up.
