Mighty Mule Keypad & Intercom Repair: The Houston Owner’s Guide

We stock Mighty Mule keypad and intercom repair parts on our trucks across Houston, and most keypad swaps run $145 to $285 installed, intercom work typically $210 to $420 depending on the model and wiring condition. Same-day service is available for keypad failures, and we quote the exact price in writing before any work starts. Most Houston owners discover the failure the same way: the keypad beeps but the gate won’t move, or the intercom rings and rings while the visitor outside hears nothing at all.

This page covers which Mighty Mule keypad and intercom versions we repair, what fails first, what a replacement actually costs in Houston, and whether the job is worth doing yourself.

Which Mighty Mule Models This Applies To

Mighty Mule’s keypad and intercom lineup splits into two rough families, and the compatibility gotcha matters. The FM136/FM137 wireless keypads pair with the MM260 through MM572 series openers, while the newer MMKPD and MMTFR keypad and telephone entry units work with the MM600/MM700 series and select smart controls. The older FM136 keypads transmit a fixed security code on a DIP-switch bank; the newer units use rolling-code encryption that must be matched to the control board’s version. If you pull the battery cover and see eight tiny white switches, you have the older architecture, and a used keypad from another gate often will not pair cleanly without reprogramming both ends.

On the intercom side, Mighty Mule’s telephone entry modules depend on the gate control board supporting the auxiliary telephone relay. Not every MM series board does, so before we quote a replacement we verify the board revision and the existing wiring run. Portcullis Gate Repair Houston is an independent service provider, not affiliated with Mighty Mule, so our recommendation is always what works for your opener, not a brand loyalty play. For keypads, we install OEM Mighty Mule units and quality aftermarket equivalents that use the same encryption scheme in most cases: the OEM runs $15 to $40 more, and the tradeoff is usually just warranty length and keypad key travel feel. For intercoms, we lean OEM because the relay timing and audio impedance match the board cleanly without splicing adapters.

If you still have the opener manual or can read the model tag on the control board, that’s the fastest way to confirm compatibility. We also check the board’s firmware revision on site, because Mighty Mule changed keypad encryption slightly across production years even inside the same model series.

Signs Your Mighty Mule Keypad & Intercom Repair Is Failing

  • Keypad lights up, gate doesn’t move. The keypad is transmitting, but either the encrypted code has fallen out of sync with the control board or the opener’s radio receiver has drifted. This is the most common Houston failure after a hard storm cycle.
  • Keypad is completely dead with fresh batteries. Water intrusion through the silicone keypad membrane corrodes the internal terminals. Houston’s humidity and hurricane-season downpours shorten these seals by a year or two versus drier climates.
  • Some buttons work, others don’t. Membrane keypad cell degradation starts with the most-used digits, usually the first and last entry zone numbers. Once cells start failing, the drift accelerates and full replacement is cheaper than fighting it.
  • Intercom rings, but no audio passes. The speaker diaphragm or the microphone capsule corrodes at the wire connections. This is a terminal part failure, not a rewiring job.
  • Visitors hear buzzing or no dial tone at all. The intercom’s telephone relay has failed or the power supply to the entry module is draining. We see this often on older MMTFR units wired with original, undersized transformers.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In Houston, a Mighty Mule keypad replacement installed runs $145 to $285. That includes the part, programming, and verifying the opener actually responds from the street. Intercom replacement runs $210 to $420 installed, with the spread driven by whether we can reuse the existing wire run or need to pull new low-voltage pair, and whether the control board needs a relay board added for telephone entry. If the existing wiring is in good shape, most intercom swaps fall near the middle of that range.

Every price is written and agreed before we turn a wrench, per the Kingswell Guarantee. That means the number we quote is the number you approve, before any work starts. Each repair also carries the 365-Day Done Right Promise in writing on the invoice: if the keypad or intercom repair fails inside that year, we come back and fix it at no charge, including the return visit.

DIY or Call Us?

For a dead keypad, the safe owner check is straightforward: replace the battery with a fresh one, then see if the keypad beeps and the indicator lights. If it’s dead with known-good batteries, the failure is internal and it’s not worth opening the case: the circuit traces are coated and the membrane tears at the rivets, and a partially resealed keypad just fails again in three months. If it beeps but the gate doesn’t move, the code sync is the issue, and that’s a programming job worth handing off, mainly because the sync procedure varies by board revision and a wrong step can lock the receiver for a solid reset cycle.

On intercoms, we recommend against opening the housing unless you’re comfortable with low-voltage audio circuit tracing. The speaker and microphone capsules are joined to the board with thin signal wires that pull loose easily, and a shorted capsule can damage the board’s audio path. The low-voltage side is not a shock risk, but it’s delicate, and guessing on replacement parts usually costs more than a service call. Tell me what the gate is doing, or not doing, and I’ll give you a real number before I ever touch a wrench. Call (325) 378-0676 and we’ll tell you what we can do, same day, over the phone.
